Booksmart Fair
Art on Paper and the Center for Book Arts (CBA) are collaborating to launch BOOKSMART FAIR, a new artists’ book fair at the front of this year’s Art on Paper. This “fair within a fair” will showcase books outside the scope of a typical art book fair and put ideas, material, and form all on equal footing.
The Center for Book Arts promotes active explorations of artistic practices related to the book as an art object. Founded in 1974, the Center for Book Arts is the oldest non-profit dedicated to elevating and furthering the book arts and book art through education, preservation, exhibition, art making, and community building.
CBA has invited eight institutions to participate in the inaugural edition, each of which will bring a curated selection of artists’ books that explore the form in various ways, from highly tactile and physical objects to conceptual works.
The participating organizations are:
- Women’s Studio Workshop
- Visual Studies Workshop
- MoMA Library Council
- Dieu Donné
- CODEX Foundation
- Center for Book Arts
- Book/Print Artist/Scholar of Color Collective
- 10×10 Photobooks
The MoMA Library Council will exhibit Charles LeDray’s Book Ends, a collection of miniature reproductions of used books. LeDray’s books are miniature, abridged, and altered versions of eighteen used books that the artist discovered in secondhand stores, yard sales, or on the streets of New York, and his library. The altered books reveal the multiple histories of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Art on Paper Programming
FREE FILM: NYC!
Lower Eastside Girls Club and photographer-in-residence Destiny Mata is partnering with WORTHLESS STUDIOS to distribute free film and offer onsite photography classes. By participating in FREE FILM: NYC!, you can borrow a camera, get a free roll of film, and learn how to develop photos. The goal is to democratize the documentation of reality. The photographs will be included in an upcoming book project.
Shoestring Press
Shoestring Press, a fine art print studio and shared workspace in Brooklyn, will host daily activities at Art on Paper this September. The press is dedicated to helping artists create beautiful work by providing affordable studio space, master printer services, and a supportive community.
The studio will demonstrate various printmaking methods, including silkscreen printing and linocut, and create limited-edition works available exclusively at the fair. Attendees can also participate in free workshops to develop their own linocut prints and silkscreen tote bags.
In addition, Shoestring Press will host a dynamic Live Printing Workshop, immersing visitors in daily activities, including live printing sessions with artists including Mike Perry, Victoria Carter, and Layla Nami. In addition to witnessing the magic of printmaking, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops exploring methods such as linocut and silkscreen printing.
Shoestring Press is a great place for artists of all levels to learn about printmaking and create beautiful works of art. The studio’s affordable studio space and master printer services make it accessible to everyone, and the supportive community provides a great place to learn and grow as an artist.
